PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

The faculty and staff of Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School are dedicated to providing a comprehensive learning program where all students are challenged to achieve to their maximum potential in all areas of the curriculum, develop personal and social responsibility, and grow in positive self-esteem as unique individuals, within a safe and nurturing environment.  

We recognize that parents are the first and most important “teachers” of our children, and thus have a significant role as partners in the formal education of students.  Parent interest and involvement in, and support of school efforts, are golden “keys” to a child’s success.  We welcome you to our wonderfully diverse multi-cultural, multi-lingual educational family and look forward to your active partnership with us.
 

COMMUNICATIONS

Clear and open communications between school and home are essential to the success of children’s school experiences.  Parents are always welcome, and indeed encouraged, to express their concerns, suggestions, and comments.  As a general guideline, parent should contact their child’s teacher regarding any classroom-related matters, or matters related to their particular youngster.  Our staff will be glad to return a phone call to you or arrange a conference if needed, before or after school.  However, we do request that all respect “instructional learning time” and avoid classroom interruptions or times when teachers when teachers are with their pupils.  The school administration is committed to facilitating effective school-home communications in every way possible.
 

SCHOOL HOURS AND SUPERVISION

The school day for all regular education students begins at 8:40 a.m. Staff supervision on yards is available before school beginning at 8:25 a.m.  Parents should not send students to school before this time.   Grade K-5 students are dismissed at 2:40 p.m.  Since there is no supervision for students who remain on campus after dismissal, parents are advised to pick up their children, or arrange for prompt “walking home” at dismissal time”. 
 

EMERGENCY INFORMATION

Every child must have on file a FULLY-COMPLETE Emergency Card indicating the names and phone numbers of all persons authorized to pick up students from school in event of an emergency, including accident or illness.  The Emergency Card MUST include at least two contacts besides a parent/guardian and parties listed on the Emergency Card without written permission from parents.  Updating of Emergency Card information is a parent responsibility, and must be done through the school office.

Every child must be provided at the beginning of each school year an emergency “SNAK-PAK” containing two or three small cans or cartons of fruit juice, or two or three small SEALED snacks (such as granola bars, nuts, etc.) which have a long “shelf-life” and which are nutritious in nature.  Should a major emergency occur, such as an earthquake, our responsibility will be to provide supervision of students until they are properly released to authorized persons.  During such an emergency, it is possible that children might be on school premises for many hours and need liquids and some nutritional snacks.  Please do not send liquids in glass containers, and do not provide snack that could become stale or rancid (especially avoid “junk food” items such as chips, twinkies, etc.).  Emergency “snak-paks” are to be contained in Zip-lock-type plastic “baggies.”  These “snak-paks” will be returned to parents in June if not needed.
 

ABSENCES/TARDIES

Regular and punctual attendances are key factors in a child’s learning success.  Children do become ill, however, and when they are ill they SHOULD NOT COME TO SCHOOL.  When a child is going to be absent parents are expected to phone the school early in the morning (415-759-2837).  When a child returns to school, please provide a note to the teacher stating the dates and reason for absence.  

Students are expected to be on time to school.  Tardiness disrupts the learning program.  Students who do arrive tardy MUST bring a note to the office before being admitted to class.
 

HOMEWORK POLICY

Homework is an important extension of the learning process.  It provides needed reinforcement and independent practice of skills and concepts.  It helps children develop personal discipline and responsibility, and study HABITS which will be important in future years of schooling.  Homework is assigned Mondays through Thursdays.  Older students may have long-term assignments or projects periodically requiring work over several evenings or weeks.  Parents should promote good “home study” practices by”
1.    Taking interest in homework and providing guidance.
2.    Establishing and helping to “organize” homework routines, including a regular time and (quiet) place for homework.
3.    Assuring that homework is completed correctly and returned on time.

If, due to emergency circumstances, homework cannot be completed, please write a note to your child’s teacher.
 

MEAL SERVICES

Our school offers a light breakfast and a lunch program.  Application forms for free or reduced-priced meals are send home in the first week of school.  All information on these forms must be completed for processing by the District’s Student Nutrition Services Department.  Until forms are approved, parents are advised to send full-price meal payments if they wish for their child to participate in the cafeteria meal program.

Please send extra money for each meal.  Breakfast purchases are made directly at the kitchen.  Lunch orders are made through the classroom teacher.  Since our school is not a “cooking” site, all lunches must be ordered by 9:45 a.m. from another location.

To maintain optimum learning ability, children need to be well-nourished.  Thus, we expect that children should have something for breakfast and also eat a wholesome lunch, whether brought from home or via the cafeteria.  Cafeteria lunch menus are posted each month in classrooms and entrees are indicated in our monthly calendar.
 

STUDENT CONDUCT

The safety and well-being of every student is a critical concern of all staff at R.L.S.  Our school has adopted seven basic rules which should guide the conduct and behavior of our students.  These are the rules:
1.    Follow directions of all school staff.
2.    Take care of school materials and property.
3.    At the bell: stop, look, and listen!
4.    Leave candy, gum, and toys at home.
5.    Walk and speak quietly in the building
6.    Be a friend: be kind, be fair!
7.    Do your best in all you do!

These, and other specific classroom, yard, cafeteria, and bus regulations, are routinely reviewed and reinforced by teachers and other staff.  We believe that it is a right of every student to learn and every teacher to teach in a positive and safe environment.  Thus, it is an expectation that the behavior and conduct of every student adhere to the rules and regulations established, and where problems or conflicts may arise; children learn to work cooperatively to resolve difficulties through appropriate methods and with assistance of school staff.
 

FIELD TRIPS

Field trips are an integral part of our learning program.  These are planned by individual teachers.  District policy requires that all students have parent/guardian-signed permission slips to be able to participate in field trips.  Many such trips require assistance of additional adult chaperones.  When asked, please consider lending your help in order for your child’s class to maximize learning opportunities through a field trip.
 

SCHOOL AND PERSONAL PROPERTY

Textbooks, classroom materials and supplies, library books, computers, games and other equipment, furniture, and room facilities are among school property.  Appropriate use and care of these is a matter of student responsibility.  Loss, misuse, defacement, or damage of school property is unacceptable and may be a matter for which parents are liable.

Children’s personal property (such as jackets, lunchboxes, backpacks, etc.) should always be labeled with student’s first and last name (in “permanent” black ink, please.)  Children often “forget” belongings in the yard or other places at school, and many, many “Lost and Found” articles go unclaimed every year because they are not properly marked.  Children should not wear expensive jewelry, watches, or otherwise bring to school any personal articles of value.  Radios, video games or equipment, and other “toys” are to be left at home.
 

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

Students who derive the most success from their educational experiences are generally those whose parents are actively involved in their education.  Parent/Teacher conferences, attendance at Back-To-School night, Open House, and regular homework monitoring are basic ways for parents to be involved, but there are a variety of other ways, also.  Successful schools are ones where parents demonstrate active participation on councils and committees, volunteering to help with special activities or projects, or serve as classroom helpers, field trip chaperones, yard supervisors, etc.  At Robert Louis Stevenson School, there are numerous opportunities for parent involvement.  One of the most important avenues for parent involvement is through our P.T.A., which works to support and enhance our educational programs and other important projects beneficial to our school community.  We strongly encourage every parent/family to become a member of our P.T.A. and to participate in any way possible!
 

VISITATION POLICY

All parents are invited and encouraged to visit and volunteer at Robert L. Stevenson.  District policy requires that all visitors must register in the office before visiting classrooms.  We recommend Tuesdays as a general day for classroom observations, but advises that it’s best to call ahead to arrange visits with individual teachers.  Regular volunteers are asked to contact our Volunteer Coordinator for orientation information and registration.
 

PARKING

Our school is located in an area with lots of street parking available nearby.  Persons who drive students to/from school are expected to adhere to City Traffic Regulations and NOT “double-park” or park in white zoned bus spaces.  Double-parking (especially before and after school hours) pose a great hazard to children, encouraging unsafe practices.  Thus, or students are not permitted to leave from, or enter, double-parked vehicles.  Drivers of our students are requested to park properly to drop off or pick up students, and show courtesy to school neighbors by not parking in (or blocking) private driveways.
